WOODBRIDGE, N.J., April 25, 2024 – In response to the critical need for continuous safety awareness and practices within the tree care industry, NIP Group proudly announces the establishment of a national “Tree Safety Month” for tree care professionals. With over 35 years of dedicated service to safeguarding the tree care industry through its specialized insurance program, TreePro®, NIP Group is committed to reducing accidents and fatalities in the industry.
According to the Tree Care Industry Association and presentation by John Ball, PH.D., BCMA, CTSP, published in “Tree-Work Safety by the Numbers[1],” the tree care profession faces significant risks. The average annual fatality rate for tree workers is alarmingly high, far surpassing the national average for all industries. Factors contributing to this risk include automobile accidents, falls, contact with objects or equipment, exposure to harmful substances, and overexertion.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics further reveals sobering statistics: tree workers represent less than 0.05% of the U.S. workforce yet account for about 1.4% of work-related fatalities.[2] Furthermore, non-fatal injury rates for tree workers are substantially higher than the national average.
“In light of these findings, it is imperative that we take proactive steps to enhance safety awareness and practices within the tree care industry,” says Tom Doherty, SVP of National Programs for NIP Group. “Tree Safety Month will serve as a platform for awareness, education, and resource dissemination, empowering our broker network and their clients to mitigate risks and prioritize safety.”
The timing of this initiative is particularly poignant. Safety awareness activities commence now through May, a month when historically high numbers of fatal accidents occur within the tree care profession.
Over the course of the campaign, NIP Group will provide its national broker network and their clients with complimentary access to distracted driving courses, tree safety checklists, risk mitigation resources, and more. These initiatives aim to equip brokers and their tree care clients with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent accidents, reduce injuries, and save lives.
“We believe that by fostering a culture of safety and implementing best practices, we can make a meaningful impact on the well-being of tree care professionals nationwide,” adds Doherty.
